Fa ra ra ra ra…
A South African Christmas…hmm…not so much. First of all, it’s hot. Second, there were NO Christmas movies on TV or any Christmas songs on the radio! Third, our families are not here.
On Christmas Eve, Nate, Rebecca, Allison (friend of ours visiting from the states), and I returned from a couple days at Pilanesburg National Park (125,000 acre game park) and were in desperate search for food. 7pm, and no grocery stores or restaurants were open. But then we saw a light! Wing Wah Chinese Restaurant! We immediately sang “Fa ra ra ra ra…” and burst into laughter in honor of the movie “A Christmas Story”. So, in solidarity with Ralphie and in search of some way to make it feel like Christmas we decided to go for it. (Even though I haven’t eaten Chinese food in 10 years…for a reason!) So, we got our Chinese take-away and went home to watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Allison and I ate about 3 bites of our “cashew chicken” and just couldn’t force ourselves to eat anymore. In the words of Allison, “Even the rice is bad”. Not long after the movie was over, the rumble in the Bronx began and Allison and I proceeded to heave for most of the night! So, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day weren’t exactly that traditional this year. BUT, when my whole family called and sang “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” over Skype, it made me happy.
My attempt to get the lady at the Chinese restaurant to sing, “Fa ra ra ra ra”.
